Is It Finished?
This week we received the tremendous news that the re-drilling of the Kalo well is complete. If you’ve followed this process, you understand our cautious optimism with the future of this project. Natural causes, human error, miscommunication between leaders, a steep learning curve for all involved (including Africa Water and Life)…all have created challenges to getting this well running and delivering water to the people.
But today, the water is flowing and clean. The Water Use Committee (seen below) is established. A secure fence surrounds the main distribution point. Clean water is being delivered to the medical clinic. Ahhhhhh. Just makes you feel good, doesn’t it.
Our hope is that the well functions without setbacks so that its use creates momentum for individuals, families, and the community as a whole, leading to the necessary behavior changes to make it sustainable. Using the water hygienically and managing it justly is not guaranteed by its availability. We will work with our partners to do the most possible (without paternalism) to make sure this happens.
